There is a current demand for more dependable and autonomous technology. Systems are becoming increasingly complex in order to perform complicated missions in challenging environments. To guarantee mission-level resilience the limited adaptivity of standard control techniques is not enough, there is a need for actual self-engineering by the system themselves at runtime. For that purpose we propose to leverage the engineering models and biologically inspired self-awareness capabilities to build functional metacontrol loops. The resultant design patterns can be used to specify the architecture of software-intensive control systems for autonomous applications. The proposed approach goes beyond the customary applications in mobile robotics into the deep waters of autonomous systems engineering. A necessary technology for the machines of the future.
