ColoSAAL is a national research project funded by the Spanish government.

The development of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems is a challenging one. It is is inherently expensive because of, among others, the necessary experimentation with real hardware and the uncertainty when determining the actual functionality of systems. It needs an effective and early feedback from the end-user, and, at the same time, have to preserve the end-user dignity, privacy, and integrity.

Transferring parts of the development work on the AAL solution to computer simulations allows reducing costs and easing experimentation. This development philosophy is what we call Virtual Living Lab. This transfer has to exist in both directions. It is not only bringing the problem to the computer; it is also being capable of taking out a working solution from the computer.
